The third generation FD3S type RX-7 appeared in December of the same year, replacing the second generation RX-7, whose production ended in 1991. This FD was released at the same time through Mazda's newly established sales channel, Infini, and was therefore named the ``Infini RX-7''.
The styling is more sports car-like than the second generation. While taking advantage of the low profile unique to rotary engine vehicles, the 3-number design creates a wider and more stable style. The Type R, which debuted as a 4-seater with a 5-speed manual transmission, was changed to the Type R-S with the 95 model released in March 1995, and became the Type RS with a minor change in January 1996.
The engine installed in this Type RS is based on the 13B installed in the previous generation FC, but after making improvements to each system such as intake and exhaust, cooling, lubrication, and electricity, it is combined with a newly developed sequential twin turbo. At the time of its debut, the maximum output was 225ps / 6500rpm and the maximum torque was 30.0kgm / 5000rpm, but with a minor change in January 1996, the engine was improved and the maximum output was increased to 265ps. Although the drive system is FR, the layout is placed in a low position in the so-called front mid to ensure proper front-to-rear weight distribution.
Both the front and rear suspensions have double wishbones, which is standard for sports cars. A large-diameter hard-type damper with a gas-pressurized twin-tube structure is used, which is said to be optimal for Type RS handling, and the coil spring setting is a standard type.
