1991年12月にデビューした3代目RX-7 FD3Sは、常に進化することを止めず時間を追うごとに熟成が図られているという、非常に高い志によって支えられているスポーツカーでもある。そのRX-7が1996年1月のマイナーチェンジでエンジンが265psにパワーアップされたこともあって、そのパワーウェイトレシオは実に4.72kg / psを実現している。
ラインナップされているタイプRBというグレードは、サスペンションなどを含めたその仕様がRX-7の中では最もスタンダードなタイプと言えるだろう。そしてRX-7の中で唯一ATを搭載するのが1993年8月からそれまでのタイプXに代わってラインナップされているツーリングX。このクルマはAT搭載に合わせてパワーが255psに抑えられる。また、マツダのワークスであるマツダスピードがリリースするRX-7がAspec。このモデルはマツダスピードが開発したエアロパーツを装着するほか、より性能アップさせるためのパーツが組み込まれたモデルだ。これらRX-7の走りはどれもスポーツカーとして非常に質の高いものだが、中でもタイプRZの運動性能は圧倒的と言える。
