This project right here started its life back in 1990, drawn by designer Lee Dykstra, and managed by Mazda USA (lead by Dick St. Yves). Double wishbone in all axles and a wide bodykit which didn’t reminds in nothing the regular FC3S gen RX-7 road car. Hewland 5-speed pattern gearbox installed and power output around 600ps provided by the 13J 4-rotor screamer, the same which equipped the 767B for Le Mans in 1989 (engine provided by official Mazdaspeed division from Japan). Also a lightweight white monstrous: only 1020kg.
The RX-7 wasn’t an unfamiliar name at IMSA Camel GT when this thing appeared. The car was literally successful at the time, mostly for competing in the GTU (U for under 2.5L [later 3.0L]) class in the 80’s. For 1990, Mazda USA decided to move up to the higher “grand-touring” class of the time, the GTO (O for over than 3L of Coca-Cola).
Only two chassis were made. This one right here is the 001. It was driven by Pete Halsmer, who brought Mazda about three victories onboard of this car. And the third victory was the most significant of all, because it was the 100th represented by an RX-7. Unfortunately, they had a sort of DNF’s during the season and in many opportunities, they were defeated by the main-rival in the class and championship: the 300ZX IMSA Turbo.
The 1991 IMSA GT season, however, was the glory for this chassis and for Mazda USA in general, once they ended as the IMSA GTO class champions with Halsmer taking the drivers title too. Price Cobb drove the other chassis that year and also brought home another two victories.
The project unfortunately had a very shorten-life when Mazda USA decided to focus on the ambitious IMSA GTP program, building an all-new sports prototype 101% dedicated to the class, carrying the 1991 Le Mans winner engine on it, the R26B.
