The Vaz 2109 Sputnik was introduced early in the run of the 2108. This was basically the same car but with five doors. In fact the only changes between the cars were the body side pressings, the doors, and a few internal plastic components. Now more practical and enjoying the benefits of front wheel drive for winter motoring its popularity in the USSR was assured.
The first Vaz -2109 cars appeared in car dealerships and on the streets in 1987. Although the appearance was slightly altered they had the same trim and engine options as the 2108, but it was now rather easier to get into the rear seats. Owners had to pay a premium of about 600 roubles over the price of the 2108 to get the extra doors of the 2109. From 1988 onwards sales of the 2109 outstripped those of the 2108.
The Sputnik/Samara 2108/2109 were re-styled during production and fitted with both an enlarged engine (up from 1300cc to 1500cc) and eventually a five speed gearbox.
In Europe and the west the Samara had to be fitted with extras like alloy wheels, sound systems, and body trim like spoilers and decoration to give them showroom appeal. In markets like the UK they were competing with Skoda‘s new front wheel drive Favorit which was perceived as a superior car, as well as new superminis from Citroen and Peugeot. Sales in UK and Europe finished by about 1997, apparently GM refused to supply fuel injection kits that were needed to get the cars through western emissions tests due to potential payment problems.
The 2109 had a long and successful period of production until replaced by the substantially re-styled Samara-2. The 2109 was still being produced from kits in the Ukraine in 2011 which means that it was in production for about 25 years.
