The Caterham CT05 was the car developed by Caterham F1 Team to compete in the 2014 Formula One World Championship. It was driven by Kamui Kobayashi, returning to F1 after a year away, and Marcus Ericsson, a rookie making his debut in the sport. For the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, the car was also driven by Will Stevens, as the team attempted a late comeback after entering administration.
The CT05 was designed to comply with the radical new regulations introduced for 2014, which included a switch to 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged hybrid engines. It was powered by Renault's Energy F1-2014 power unit and featured a highly distinctive nose design that drew attention early in the season.
The car's chassis was engineered by a team led by Mark Smith, with design input from Jody Egginton, and aerodynamic work overseen by John Iley. The CT05 was the first turbo-powered Caterham F1 car, marking the team’s adaptation to the hybrid era.
Despite the fresh regulations and a completely new powertrain concept, the CT05 struggled for pace and reliability throughout the season. Caterham failed to score any championship points and spent much of the year battling at the back of the grid. Financial difficulties ultimately forced the team into administration toward the end of the season, and although they returned for the final race, the CT05 marked Caterham's last appearance in Formula One.
The CT05 featured an 8-speed gearbox, ERS hybrid system, and DRS, aligning with the technological advancements of the era—but it couldn’t overcome the team's limited resources and development capacity.
